The Liberty Bell and Judaism

September 1, 1752: The Liberty Bell arrived in Philadelphia. The Bell is inscribed with words from the 25th chapter of Leviticus, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof. It is but one of many examples of how Jewish culture and values had an impact on Western civilization in general and, in this case, early American culture specifically.

The 10-cent airmail stamp shown here was issued by the United States in 1960.
