September 18, 1938: Hank Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers hit his 52nd and 53rd home runs of the season putting him ahead of Ruth’s 1927 record setting season. Greenberg still need 7 to tie and 8 to break the Bambino’s record.
Greenberg was a hero for Jewish Americans as he was one of the few Jewish athletes who played and excelled in America’s favorite sport.
