The Battle of Stalingrad

November 19, 194 – During World War II, Soviet Union forces under General Georgy Zhukov launch the Operation Uranus counterattacks at Stalingrad, turning the tide of the battle in the USSR’s favor.

In 1992, the Marshall Islands issued a stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad.  In the tab selvage beneath the stamp itself is a quote from Zhukov that is testimony to the determination of the Russian army during this battle, “We shall hold the city or die there.”  This was one of World War II’s most brutal and bloody battles, with many of the German troops dying of cold and starvation as the Russian winter set in.
