The Panama Canal

May 4, 1904:  The United States began the construction of the Panama Canal.  The first Panamanian Jewish community, Kol Shearith Israel, was founded in 1876 when Panama was still part of Columbia.  By 1911, when the Canal was all but completed the Jewish community numbered approximately 500.

The United States issued this 2-cent postage stamp in 1913 picturing the Panama Canal:
